Short answer

Instagram draws its own interface on top of your 1080 × 1920 frame. In Reels, roughly the top 7% and bottom 20% are covered, plus a right-hand action rail about 14% wide. In Stories, roughly the top 11% and bottom 13%. Keep text inside the middle band — about 130–800 px across and 270–1270 px down — and it survives both.

You export a beautiful 9:16 title card, upload it as a Story, and the headline is sitting under the progress bars. Or you post a Reel and the caption strip eats the bottom line of your text. Nothing was cropped — every pixel you exported is still there. It is just underneath Instagram’s own buttons.

This guide maps where those buttons sit, gives you a working set of numbers, and — importantly — is honest about how approximate those numbers are.

Read this before you trust any number below

Meta does not publish safe-zone specifications for Reels or Stories. Every inset in this guide, and every inset in our safe zone checker, is a measured approximation derived from observing the current interface. The real positions shift with device height, notch or Dynamic Island size, how long your caption is, whether an audio attribution or location sticker is present, and which app version the viewer is running. Treat these as a design margin, not a specification — and always look at your finished frame on an actual phone before you post it.

What a “safe zone” actually is

Both Reels and Stories are full-screen 9:16 surfaces. Instagram composites its interface — progress bars, profile row, caption, action buttons, reply field — directly on top of your media, not beside it. So your frame is never cropped, it is occluded. The safe zone is simply the part of the frame nothing is drawn over.

This is different from the feed’s cropping problem, where Instagram trims pixels off a file that falls outside its accepted ratio window. Here the pixels survive; they are just invisible under a button.

The Reels overlay map

Measured as proportions of the 1080 × 1920 frame, and converted to pixels for convenience:

The bottom 20% is the one that catches people. A fifth of the frame is a lot — and it is the exact place designers instinctively put a closing line or a swipe prompt.

Visual coverage and tap coverage are two different problems

The Stories tap zones are not shaded because something is drawn over them — they are shaded because they are interactive dead ground. Put a link sticker, a poll or a quiz in the left or right third and a large share of the people who try to use it will simply advance or rewind the Story instead. Your design is perfectly visible there. It is just unusable.

So there are two questions to ask about any element you place: can people see it, and can people touch it? Text only needs the first. Stickers, polls, quizzes and link taps need both, and they belong in the centre column.

The combined safe box

If you want a single rectangle that survives both surfaces without thinking about it, take the intersection of everything above and pull in a margin:

That is a box roughly 670 × 998 px inside a 1080 × 1920 frame — about a third of the total area. It feels brutally small the first time you draw it, and then you look at a few Reels you admire and notice they all live inside it.

The safe zone checker will export exactly this as a 1080 × 1920 PNG template with every mask labelled and the safe box drawn in green. Drop it into your design tool as a top layer at low opacity, design underneath it, then hide it before export.

Why the numbers move

Four things shift the boundaries, and they are worth understanding because they explain why no single set of numbers can be exactly right for everyone.

Device height

Phones are not all 9:16. A taller display letterboxes or crops the 9:16 media differently, and the interface is anchored to the screen, not to your media. On a very tall phone the caption block can sit further from the bottom of your artwork than these percentages suggest; on a shorter one, closer.

Notch and Dynamic Island

The top inset is driven by the safe area the operating system reserves. A phone with a large cutout pushes Instagram’s header down. A device without one pulls it up. The 7% and 11% figures are middle-of-the-road values, not maxima.

Caption length

This is the biggest single variable in Reels. A one-line caption occupies far less of the bottom than a three-line caption plus a long audio title plus a location tag. The bottom 20% is a reasonable planning figure for a typical caption — write a long one and it grows. If you tend to write long captions, check the length in the caption counter and design for the taller case.

App version

Instagram redesigns its interface regularly and rolls changes out in stages, so two people on the same phone model can see different layouts in the same week. Any safe-zone map, including this one, is a snapshot.

How to check your own frame

  1. Overlay before you export. Drop the exported 1080 × 1920 template over your design as a guide layer.
  2. Test the box, not the vibe. The safe zone checker lets you drop in your actual frame, drag a rectangle to where your text sits, and reads out pass or fail per surface — including which specific element covers it and what percentage of your text block is affected. It runs entirely in your browser; your frame is never uploaded.
  3. Post it to your own Story privately. Set the audience to Close Friends with only yourself on the list, or post and delete. Nothing simulates the real interface as well as the real interface.
  4. Look at it on the smallest phone you can borrow. If it works there, it works everywhere.

Five design rules that follow from all this

  • Put your key message in the upper-middle third. The band from about 20% to 60% down the frame is the most reliably clear region on both surfaces.
  • Never bottom-align text. It is the single most common failure and the most avoidable.
  • Stay off the right edge. The action rail is unavoidable in Reels and it is wider than it looks.
  • Burned-in subtitles need a margin. Auto-generated captions land near the bottom too, so subtitles you burn in yourself can collide with Instagram’s own. Bring them up.
  • Interactive stickers go in the centre column. Visible is not the same as tappable.

None of this is about outsmarting anything. It is about the difference between a viewer reading your point in the first half-second and a viewer seeing half a word under a Like button and swiping on.

No. Meta publishes recommended resolutions and ratios, but not interface inset specifications for Reels or Stories. Every safe-zone map you will find online, including ours, is measured from the live app and changes as the app changes.

Why does my Story text look fine in the editor but covered when posted?

Because the editor does not show every element that appears in playback — the progress bars, the reply bar and, in Reels, the caption block and action rail are composited at view time. Check against a safe-zone overlay rather than the editor preview.

Is the safe zone the same for Reels and Stories?

No. Stories reserve more at the top (progress bars and header) and less at the bottom. Reels reserve much more at the bottom and add a right-hand action rail. If a design has to work for both, use the intersection: roughly x 130–800 and y 269–1267.

Where should I put a link sticker in a Story?

In the centre column, between the header and the reply bar. The left and right thirds are tap-back and tap-forward zones, so a sticker placed there is visible but frequently mis-tapped.

Do safe zones change with phone model?

Yes. Screen height, notch or Dynamic Island size, and the operating system’s own safe area all shift where Instagram anchors its interface. That is why the sensible approach is a generous margin rather than a pixel-exact boundary.
